PWM and MPPT charge controllers are used to charge batteries with solar power. The PWM controller acts as a switch connecting the solar array to the battery, equalizing their voltages. In contrast, the MPPT controller is more sophisticated, adjusting its input voltage to harvest the maximum power from the solar array and converting it to the required voltage for the battery and load. This decouples the array and battery voltages, allowing for more efficient energy conversion.

MPPT controllers excel in colder to temperate climates, while both controllers perform similarly in subtropical to tropical climates. Beyond basic control functions, an MPPT controller includes a DC to DC voltage converter, minimizing power loss during voltage conversion.

MPPT controllers aim to harvest power near the Maximum Power Point (MPP) of the array while supplying the required voltage for the battery and load. This flexibility allows for diverse configurations, such as a 12-volt battery on one side and panels wired in series to produce 36 volts on the other. An MPPT controller can provide charge current even in challenging conditions, like high cell temperatures or low irradiance, where a PWM controller may struggle.

As the array size increases, cabling complexity grows. The option to wire more panels in series and reduce current makes installing an MPPT controller beneficial as array power exceeds a few hundred Watts.
